The Great Baja Adventure

Day 4 - part 1

Our morning adventure took us meandering through a mangrove.

The bird life was amazing.
Here a pelican sits atop the mangrove canopy preening itself.

We meandered into the mangrove waterways.

Disappearing altogether.

A snowy egret looks on in bewilderment.

Life in the mangrove is very still and quiet.

You can see the nurseries of fish swimming through
the water. Most of the fish grow up in the safety of the
mangrove lagoons before heading out to sea as adults.

Once in the lagoon we spot our friends from the fishing village.

Simon, Ricardo and Victor greet us.
They are setting nets in the lagoon of the mangrove.

We head to shore for a quick exploration.

Turkey vultures feeding and drying their wings in the sun.

Pretty good source of food.

We head back to the mouth of the
lagoon making our way back to the Fiesta.

We pass by a curious Curlew.

Back to the boat to hoist the anchor onto our next adventure.

The beautiful fishing village of Isla Pardito.

Upon arrival we are met by Simon and our friends on the island.

Part of the days work. Filleting Trigger Fish.

Stingray wings brined, salted and ready to hang to dry in the sun.
The salt and brine come from the small salt pans we visited on Day 2.

A couple of the fishermen's wives handcraft  jewelry to sell to visitors.

How cool! Reconstructing the ribcage a fairly large whale.

Paddy, Darryl and David taking it all in.
How can you not be awed by the view and the people.

... and may I present the Van Someren family.

After our visit we head back to the boat.

Early to bed... early to rise, indeed. Our morning adventure took us to a mangrove lagoon where water was like glass. It was such a beautiful start to a hot day. We were able to take the pangas in and meander through the little waterways that cut through the mangrove trees. The birds were out, the sea was happy, everything was so calm and peaceful.

In the depths of the mangrove lagoon we happened upon some friends from the fishing village who were setting up their nets for the days catch. We went to the rocky beach at the lagoon and found turkey vultures gorging on a fish carcass and drying their wings in the sun. On our way back out of the mangrove we spotted many birds; herons, egrets, pelicans and ibises to name a few. It was time for breakfast and our stomachs were definitely telling us so.

After breakfast we made a trip to one of the fishing villages to deliver some gift bags and to look at the days catch. We watched them fillet some trigger fish and saw how they preserve and dry their fish in the traditional way using the sea salt and brine.

While at the village we had a chance to explore the island where we found part of a rib cage of a whale. After our visit we headed back to the boat for our next adventure.
