Day 5

The group on the shores of San Evaristo.

We needed to plan our tour of the island so that it would coincide
with visiting families with children. We still had gift bags to deliver.

One of the families we visited. Please refer to the
Baja Gifts Program page, of this journal, for the distribution of the gifts.

This was once the schoolhouse of the community.
It no longer has enough children (school age) to sustain the school.

We headed up over the hill to the other
side where the commercial salt pans are.

We found cattle.

The wild donkeys had come down out of the hills.

The commercial salt pans.

Taking a closer look.

Then we hit the beach in search of sea treasures.

It was a long grueling hike but we enjoyed it. It was
nice to be heading back to the beach and the boat.

Stretch wore his running shoes so Ryan had to carry him to the panga.

The afternoon was spent working on the Panterra Expedition Workbooks.

All the students were diligently working away on the workbooks.

Even Mr. Dang pulled out his books.

The sun was setting but we still had a few activities planned for the evening.

We all got together to decorate and celebrate Mr. Dang's birthday.

He received a card and presents.

That silly tradition of sticking faces in the cake. This would be the last time.

Luckily Mr. Dang didn't mind. He got his cake in the end.

Later into the night we set up the nightlight and collected plankton.

With a special filter we are able to show the plankton
and something that released an egg mass into the water.

A sea lion also showed up and did a show for us in the nightlight.

Stasia and Mrs. Joblinski taking photos of the plankton we collected.

A fish larvae, you can see the vertebrae column.

A decapod clinging (chewing on) a young fireworm.

It was time to call it a night.

We started off the day with a very traditional Mexican breakfast, which consisted of eggs, refried beans and tortillas. After, we went outside for some morning fresh air and the very cool breeze was incredibly refreshing. Lela reminded us that we were going to another village to give children and parents our gifts. To prepare, we started to put our sunscreen on: put on our hats, and get a hold of our gifts that we prepared and soon headed off in a panga. We traveled straight to San Evaristo: on the mainland of Baja Mexico.

Locals greeted us on the beach, gave us a quick tour of their community, and showed us their homes. In return, we gave them our gifts and took pictures with them. After we gave most of our gifts, we headed up a steep hill for our morning hike. As soon as we reached the top of the hill, we could see the saltpans, which were used by the locals. It was used to harvest sea salt. We walked around the saltpans after Lela gave a quick introduction and find out there is a very long process in producing salt.

After we headed down to the beach, we walked along the shores in search for agates and shells that we were able to keep. Many dead puffer fishes were in the way but we managed to get around them. After the beach, we headed back to the boat, retracing our steps back to the saltpans, passed the hill, and to the pangas. When we were back on the boat, a pleasant hot soup and chicken tortillas were promptly served to us as we sat down from our long hike. When we finished, we quietly left one by one, going outside and slept on the back of the boat on lounge chairs. When we awoke, it was late afternoon; we were excited for what we were going to do in the evening since everything we do is a big surprise.

Since “Romeo and Juliet” was assigned to the Grade 9 students for English, we had to act out our roles and we had a discussion about the events happening presently in the book. It was getting late, so we went outside, covered ourselves in blankets and told each other ghost stories. An hour later, we were called in for dinner, which comprised of fresh fish, salad and bread. The food was delicious since everything was made fresh.

When we finished we all planned out how we were going to surprise Mr. Dang for his birthday. Mrs. J took him outside for a talk and all us students gathered balloons and cake, and decorated the ship’s salon in less than 5 minutes. When Jenna and Anisha went to get him, the rest of the students hid under the tables and turn the lights out to scream surprise when he opened the door. Mr. Dang was thrilled and saw the giant chocolate cake presented in front of him. We all ate a slice. After, we looked at the food chain from the nightlight and worked on our workbooks for an hour. We all enjoyed our day and went to sleep early to see what adventure comes tomorrow.
