Day 1 and 2

Day 1

The group arrived in good spirits. Both excited and
nervous about the adventure they were about to embark upon.

Hungry and happy to be in Mexico.

Their first meal was fresh beef tacos.

With tortillas the cooks had just made.

We spent the rest of the evening leisurely chatting with the

students as they played a game of cards. Shortly after the

group bedded down for the night after an exciting day of travel.

Day 2

We departed La Paz early in the morning and arrived at our first

destination. The California sea lion habitat known as Los Isolotes.

As the seas were not so calm, but still very safe, we
put the group into lifejackets and headed out to explore.

For most of these students this was
the first time they ever saw a sea lion.

A turkey vulture soars above the habitat.

The habitat was loaded with hundreds of sea lions.

They weren't scared of us so we got to see them
in their natural surroundings and natural behavior.

Here a male sea lion is barking up a storm.

A couple of females snoozing on the rocks.

Above them on the upper part of the
rocks were a few Blue-footed Booby birds.

Midway down the cliff were a group of Brown Booby birds.

A little pup looks on as we pass by.

Enjoying a home cooked authentic Mexican lunch.

Chillaxin' on the bowsprit. One of the favorite spots on the ship.

Afternoon spent swimming...

... diving

jumping...

 ... playing

and simply unwinding after 2 years of planning the trip.

An early evening fishing trip.

Nikita caught the first one.

Followed by Hillary.

A spectacular sunset reflective of the first day at sea.

Day 1
The trip down was long, with two flights and a bus ride to La Paz .The first flight was at 6:40 at Edmonton International Airport so we had to get up at around 1:00 to get ready for the bus that left at 2:00. We then had the hour and a half bus ride to the airport, then had to wait until 4:30 to check in. There were No people at the airport except for the people on our flight and some guys that were dancing around their baggage. We had to go through customs (that was scary), and give them our baggage. The Flight to Seattle was relatively short but we had a three-hour layover to wait through. We did a little shopping, and watched some airplanes take off, then just sat around and listened to music and played cards... and threw them around. There wasn’t much else to do so we played random card games.

Then we had a four-hour flight to Cabos San Lucas, Where we got into two vans to ride to La Paz. During the ride Vici shouted we should eat a puppy, and sit on a cactus for no apparent reason. With only a few accidents (a bag flew off and there was some motion sickness) we arrived at the marina. It was so hot when we got there, that we were happy to go inside away from the sun. The cacti were huge and we were quite excited to see palm trees and the Sea of Cortez for the first time. At the marina, we saw the MV Narval, and were assigned our staterooms and unpacked. We had supper soon after it was delicious. We had a talk about safety (and most were happy to go barefoot) and were allowed to explore the ship and go to bed.

Day 2
My day started at 7:00 am, we woke up for an early breakfast. Our morning location was Marina de la Paz, where we launched from at 6:00 am.

We first stopped at Lela’s Beach, but it was too rough to swim or do anything else at, so we moved on to Los Isolotes and saw all kinds of sea lions, blue and brown footed boobies, and other birds that I don’t know the names of , and then we made our way to our final destination.

Our final destination was Lobster Lagoon, which we arrived at, at about 7:00 pm, we traveled probably 65 miles, all in all, we made pretty good time.

The weather was generally fair for the duration of the journey, too windy to snorkel in the morning, but it calmed down in the afternoon, so we snorkeled off the back of the boat, and we swam, and played with the life preservers our crew put into the water for us, it was epic.

For the day we generally sailed and relaxed, at about noon we stopped at the island called Los Isolotes, and hopped in the pangas. We boated around the entire island, and saw the three main colonies of sea loins, the back side of the island, where the females and young were located, the southern most face, where the young males and females waited and grew until they had enough strength, or maturity to move on to where the other lions were, and the main colony on the front of the island, with the alpha male and female, with babies and bird poop scattered all around.

In the evening, we ate a supper consisting of the most delicious and wholesome breaded fish and rice I have ever tasted. We went out fishing in the pangas, and our group caught a land fish (a dead one we hooked for a joke to play on the other panga people) but one of the shipmates lost it. Right before bed we played a half hour game of cards and then we hit the sack.

The best part of the day was the sea lion island, seeing them all.

Good NIGHT!
