Journey of Giving - Medical Expedition

Day 3 - Part 1

The Community of Los Burros

The gang heads out to administer another day of health services.

Landing on the shores of Los Burros.

A few of the community members greet us as we arrive.
This woman was kind enough to offer her home to set up shop for the day.

It was a beautiful home with a great wrap around veranda.

Word got out and the community started to show up.

Even the kids showed up.

The area was beautiful, there were butterflies everywhere.

Back at the boat, the builders had completed there jobs the
previous day so they turned their efforts to sorting gifts for the kids.

There were tennis balls, stuffed animals,
toothbrushes, toothpaste and more...

Soccer balls, baseball bats, clothing and toiletries.

This is the contents of the gift bag.

There were a total of 22 gift bags assembled.

The gift bags along with refreshments were taken to shore.

As the gift givers (formerly the builders) arrived the medical/dental
team were busy with patients. There  was even a line up for all the
different services being offered. Chris is working on one patient
and there are two others waiting in line.

Louise is busy checking blood pressure of her patients.

The dental team take a break for a photo op.

Then back to work.

Both Dr. Garcia and Dra. Alvarado are busy as well.

Lucas and Jan help sort and gather the
medicines to fill the prescription filled by the doctors.

Believe or not but we were running low on a few of
the medicines. And we had brought boxes upon boxes.

Dr. Velasco fits a few of the community
members with prescription eyeglasses.

The builders hand out the gift bags. The kids were very excited.

As we were busily working away the feds showed up.
I thought it was to do an immigration clearance check
so I approached them and carried on for a bit only to find
out it had nothing to do with us and everything to do with
one of the community members. Oops! A little embarassing!!!!

Dr. Garcia assigns the responsibility of the
community First Aid Kit to one of the community members.

Liz brought down a few quilts so we found an elderly
community member, Maria Louisa and gave her one.
She was very happy to receive the gift.

And that concludes our visit to the beautiful butterfly community of Los Burros.

This was the first time I have ever met or visited this community. They were such lovely, kind folks. I believe it is the first time a medical team has visited them as well so they were as equally excited to see us as Dr. Garcia and the Department of Health in La Paz were to meet and administer the healthcare.  Everyone was busy with patients and more waiting in line.

When I organized the trip I totally overlooked the kids. We do nothing but bring gifts for the kids on our other trips but this time I simply overlooked it. Well, that's the beauty of having like minded friends. The Tinworth's brought several bags of all the toys, toiletries, soccer balls, etc. It was their idea. Thanks a ton!. It was, without a doubt, the icing on the cake.

And to think we still have another afternoon of healthcare ahead of us. Does it get any better. Read on it does!!!!!!
