Day 5

Our morning adventure took us exploring Skink Trail.

We headed up the arroyo.

Our first stop was at a Cardon Cactus approx. 25 ft. in height.

A few feet away was a humming bird perched on a branch.

Andrea checks out a creeping cactus.

The arroyo eventually meandered through canyon like walls.

A Desert Iguana looks on.

A Cardon cactus that has fallen but is still growing.

A quick reprieve from the sun.

A tarantula molt with fangs still intact.

The afternoon took us exploring a mangrove environment.

There were many offshooting canals.

A Great Blue Heron watches from the canopy of the mangroves.

Life found on the trunk of the mangrove tree.

The mangroves opened up into a lagoon.

A Snowy Egret looks on.

On the way back from the mangroves we found an inflated puffer
(Balloonfish) floating by so we scooped it up and got a closer look.

A very cool close encounter.

An afternoon jump off the boat.

The students work on the Daily Journals for the website and...

... the Panterra Workbooks.

It was so cool to work with the students. We never once had to
tell them they had to work on the workbooks. They took it upon

themselves to record the days activities and identify the plants,

fish, birds and mammals we encountered, all on their own.

The evening nightlight brought us a considerable amount of entertainment.

Meet Bob the Pelican. Bob is going to teach us how Pelicans fish.

His food source, flying fish.

We watched Bob catch and consume
17 fish before he was through for the night.

Today was our fifth day of our boat trip. We woke up at around 8 o’clock and ate breakfast. After breakfast we got ready to go on a hike.

We took the pangas to land and went hiking "Skink Trail". The trail was on an arroyo, which is a dry riverbed. On our hike, we saw blue tailed skinks, desert iguana, and many other lizards. The desert iguana was so scared he started to do push ups.

Eventually, we took the pangas back to the boat. We then ate lunch and quickly got changed for our next adventure. We hopped into the pangas and visited the mangroves in Lela’s Lagoon. In the mangroves we saw a Great Blue Heron, an osprey, an egret and a couple other birds. It was interesting to see all the marine life in the mangroves. We saw oysters, white sponges, puffer fish and stingrays. We learnt about how they are important to the ecosystem.

While heading back to the boat we spotted a puffed up puffer fish. Lela picked it up in her hat and we all examined it. The puffer fish was really squishy and slimy. After we had a siesta we had time to explore the water around Lobster Lagoon. We kayaked, swam and snorkeled. Some people saw a moray eel.

We headed back to the boat to work on our workbooks after a couple of fun hours in the water. We ate dinner and watched some marine life underneath a night-light. We saw flying fish, reef cornet fish and California half beaks. We also saw Bob the Pelican catch and eat eat 17 fish. He was so stuffed that it took him several tries to fly off into the night. After watching the night-light we went to bed.
