Day 3 and 4

The first adventure of the day was to
the California sea lion habitat of Los Isolotes.

We headed out to explore the island.

The habitat is a volcanic outcrop made of Pila rock.

The sea lions were having a lazy day... as usual.

Some played in the water ...

... while others posed for pictures.

A pair of Blue-footed Booby birds look on.

A Brown Pelican comes in for a landing.

After the sea lion adventure Christine took  time to teach her students.

Later in the afternoon, and while underway to our
next destination, we encountered Bottlenosed Dolphins.

They came right up to the ship.

One jumps clear out of the water.

After lunch we spent the afternoon exploring the island of Isla San Francisco.

We visited the salt pans mined by the fishermen of Isla Pardito.

We hiked to the other side of the
island and poked around in the intertidal zone.

Daisy Brittlestar, Slate pencil Sea Urchin, Gulf Sunstar,
Spotted Nudibranch, sea tar (lichen), tubeworms and sponges.
It is amazing what lives under the rocks!

After playing in the intertidal zone we hiked along the
beach exploring the geology and looking for sea treasures.

The day ended with a beautiful sunset nestled in the backdrop.

Day 4

We arrived on their shores of the fishing village of
Isla Pardito. The fishermen were emptying their nets.

A Thresher Shark is pulled from one of the nets.

A cross marking the death of one of the elders.

Jeff holds up a Sicklefin Smoothhound Shark.

Little Siva finds a cow skull and conch shell.

Big Siva has a gift for the only kid on the island, Felipe.
Eventually Felipe accepted his stuffed animal gift.

Melven visits as the wives of the fishermen put
out their handcrafted jewelry to sell to the group.

Our afternoon adventure took us to the fishing community
of San Evaristo. Here, they also mine commercial salt pans.

There are approximately 60 salt pans.

The two Sivas pose for a picture.

The community also handles livestock. Cattle and burros.

Melven finds a little child hiding behind a rock.
