Day 2 - part 2

Day 2 - part 2

Our next stop was at the California sea lion habitat of Los Isolotes.

The sea lions were happy and a couple came out to greet us.

Once we anchored the ship we boarded the pangas to get a
closer look at the island. A couple of young sea lions were
playing in the water. They didn't seem to mind we were there.

A female poses as we pass by.

A male lounges on the rocks as a Sally Lightfoot scurries by.

Another male soaks in the water.

The sea lions didn't mind when we got close. They were all just "chillaxin".

This sea lion swims effortlessly through the water.

Midway up the cliffs of the island one can find the "Brown Booby" bird.

Above, on the higher parts of the cliffs you can find the Blue-footed Booby birds.

The late afternoon was spent snorkeling.

Mexican Goatfish.

A Pyramid Seastar.

There was so much cool stuff to see.

A male Mexican Hogfish.

Crown of Thorns Seastar and Damsel fish.

For some students this was the first time they
had seen, with their own eyes, life beneath the sea.

As we departed the sea lions, enroute to our evening
destination, we encountered a pod of Common Dolphins.

They glided effortlessly under the bow ...

Splashed and played all around us

.

Some jumped clear out of the water.

continued from Day 1 and Day 2- part 1

Our next stop took us to the sea lion colony of Los Isolotes. There were a few hundred sea lions with one main colony of older sea lions and two other colonies of younger sea lions who will eventually challenge the older ones for territory.

We headed out in the pangas to get a closer look at the sea lions and all of the other marine life that lived on the island. Their were crabs, birds, many different types of fish. It was unbelievable. Back at the boat we hoisted the anchor and sailed to a bay where we went ashore and snorkeled.  The snorkeling was fantastic there was so much to see.

We once again hosited the anchor and headed out to our evening destination. It was a 2 hour sail where we encountered a pod of 200 dolphins. The dolphins swam under the bow,  alongside the boat and jumped and splashed all over the place. Wow, what a first day!
