Day 3
|

The first adventure of the day took us exploring
the island of Isla San Francisco. Our first stop
was the salt pans mined by the local fishermen.

A lizard scurries by.

We stopped along the path of "Cactus Alley" where
we learned about the different types of cactus and
their remarkable adaptations to a desert environment.
|

Then off to the intertidal zone where we
encountered all sorts of cool invertebrates.

Under a rock we found sponges,
calcareous tube worms and a large Chiton.

Sulphur sea cucumber.
|

Alexanders Brittlestar.

Slate Pencil sea urchin.
|

Daisy Brittle Star.

After our island hike we returned to the boat to cool off.

I think everyone in the group jumped and
these were the best 5 pictures that turned out.
|

After lunch we organized the gifts the students brought down.

There was quite a collection of gifts. Very, very thoughtful!
Please refer to the Baja Gifts Program page of this Journal.

The afternoon was spent kayaking and snorkeling.

We donned our snorkel gear and hit the water.

The water was crystal clear and loaded
with all kinds of fish and other marine life!

A school of Sergeant Major fish.
|

A Spotted Porcupine fish.

Brown Spotted sea cucumber.

King Angel fish.
|

As we headed to our overnight anchorage we spotted some dolphins.

They were under the bow riding the waves.

Then the pod was all around us.

They glided in the bow wave and surfaced for air every so often.
What a way to end a fantastic day of adventure.

Today we woke up to
another great day at sea. After a delicious breakfast we headed out to an island
to explore geology, plants and the intertidal zone.
We learned
there are many different types of cacti that have adapted differently to
the desert environment.
We also learned about how the Mexican
fisherman preserve their fish they catch by using
large salt pans that are dugout equal to sea level. These pans are then
naturally filled
to the top with salt water from the ocean. The water in the salt water
evaporates leaving behind sea salt.
After exploring the land we went to the very rocky
shore and studied invertebrates in the intertidal zone. We turned over
rocks (very gently and placed them back when we were done) and observed all the
amazing living organisms. Under the rocks we found many things including various
types of star fish, a poisonous fire worm, sea cucumbers, and many crabs.
When we finished exploring the island we headed back to the boat. Everyone rushed to put
their swim suits on so that we could jump off the boat. Jumping was extremely fun! Everyone
enjoyed this great experience. After we were done jumping we dried off,
had free time to lounge, and ate a delicious lunch.
After we were done
eating and the salon (dining room in boat) was cleaned, we got out all our
gifts that we bought to give to the children in the
villages that we will encounter throughout the week. There was quite a bit
of stuff brought. Someone said there were 28 gift bags by the time we were
through!
We then went snorkeling at a very remote area with an abundance of cool fish.
We were given the option to both kayak and snorkel. After we got back to the boat, we had
more free time to lounge around and work on our tans. As we moved the boat
to the other side of the island we spotted Bottlenosed dolphins. They were
awesome!
After we enjoyed a
excellent supper, we sat in the salon and watched a slideshow of all the
pictures taken by Lela and Stasia thus far. When the slideshow
finished we stood on the side of the boat deck and hung a 500 watt light
shining on the water which was meant to attract sea creatures for us to
observe. Unfortunately the light did not attract as many fish as we had
hoped. We will continue to try this method of attracting fish until we are
successful.
As soon as we were done with the nightlight everyone was
exhausted from an exciting and busy day and we all climbed into our bunks
and fell fast asleep excited for the days to come in our adventure. Day 3
was a fun filled awesome day and we are all excited and waiting to see
what will happen next!
