Journey of Giving
Medical Expedition Trip 1

Day 2

As we were making our way to the first community
we encountered and pod of 1000+ Common dolphins.

They were close knit and marvelous to watch how graceful and
synchronistic their movement was. The water all around us boiled with dolphins.

Jan and the gang started to sort through all the gifts the group brought
down. Please refer to the Baja Gifts Program page of this Daily Journal.

Javier asked the crew if they would like their eyes checked.
Some of the crew even received eyeglasses.

Krystil translates the Spanish written medicines into English, for the
Canadian team members, so quick access in dispensing would be easier.

Our first stop.
The shores of Las Cuevas where the neighboring communities of
Nopolo and Punta Alto also attended to received the healthcare services.

The expedition team arrives .

The nurses monitoring station is set up.
Here the nurses record blood sugar levels and blood pressure.

The doctor has his patient's room set
up in one of the bedrooms of the house.

Alma and Javier are well underway in assessing their patients.

The dentist teaches classes on proper dental care.

Meanwhile, Bob and Liz set up the kids "Arts and Crafts" classes.
They had brought down a printer and all the accessories to make
picture frames for pictures they took of the kids and their families.

Krystil helped by taking the pictures ...

Then Bob plugged the camera into the printer and printed the picture.

Then, the kids/families would place the pictures in the frames
they made and have an amazing keepsake of the healthcare visit.

A few hours later and members from
the surrounding communities still kept coming.

The next kid project , Bob and Liz had devised, was making ice cream!
First, the ingredients (cream, sugar and vanilla) were placed into a small
Ziploc Bag, then the smaller bag was placed into a larger bag with ice in it.

Then the kids had to shake the bag until the ingredients froze.

Thus making some pretty cool tasting ice cream. Imagine the brilliance
of this idea; the communities have no electricity for refrigeration. What a treat!!!!

The women in the communities do various forms of artwork to include
needlepoint and fabric art. They had brought some of their artwork to
sell to us. All of the artwork was purchased by the expedition team.

After the ice cream, gifts of toys, hygiene products, sports
equipment and clothing were distributed to the community members.

Girls received hair products and girl stuff.

The boys received toy cars and boy stuff.

A community photo with the Expedition Team.

A little R&R to cool off.

More R&R to relax ...  I think!
I have no idea what was going on. I think Lorena put these guys up to this.

We all sat out on the bow, as the sun set, reflecting on our first
day administering the healthcare. The Canadian Team had
spent months preparing for this and now it finally was a reality.
What a heartfelt day!!!!!

Where to begin! The day started with 1000+ dolphins escorting us part of the way. The water all around us boiled with the movement of the dolphins and what a perfect way to start the day.

We arrived around 9:30 am on the shores of the community of Las Cuevas. The community is in the middle of two other communities, Nopolo and Punta Alto. There are approx. 30 families that make up these three communities. Approx. 150 persons.

The doctor found his patients room, the nursing station was set up, the optometrist had set up his shop and the dentist had her first classroom of community members. All was good and the Expedtition team was busily attending to their patients.

One of the more brilliant ideas of the trip was to have activities for the kids to do while the adults were visiting the clinic. Bob and Liz came up with two ideas that were a hit for everyone, not just the kids. The first idea was to bring down a camera, printer and crafts supplies and put the kids to work designing frames for the pictures that the Tinworths would take of them. It became such a popular idea that families were showing up asking for family pictures. All were accommodated.

The second idea was homemade ice cream. Now think about this! Imagine living without refrigeration. You wouldn’t really know what cold things were like. Cold, absolutely delicious things like ICE CREAM! What a fantastic idea! A little cream, sugar, vanilla and ice and, voila, ice cream.

What an extremely thoughtful gesture to include the children in this special gift giving expedition. Thank you ever so much Bob and Liz, these activities will never be forgotten by any of the participants. They will remember this day for the rest of their lives.

After our first day of "work" the group chillaxed by swimming and jumping off the boat and enjoyed a couple of cool drinks. There was also an interesting activity that took place conducted by nurse Lorena. Group therapy, perhaps? To my amazement she had the crew involved as well.

Needless to say, it was a great day of heartfelt work and well deserved play time at sea.
