Our journeys often take you beyond the usual tourist routes, and that means some experiences may be wonderfully unpredictable. Weather, wildlife, road conditions, and local circumstances can sometimes affect an itinerary. Our experienced guides make decisions with your safety, comfort, and overall experience in mind, while allowing the flexibility that makes an expedition different from a conventional tour.


Here is some helpful information to help you prepare for your Panterra adventure.


Before You Go


  • What to Expect


Panterra journeys are designed for people who want to explore, learn, and experience Mexico in a more meaningful way.


Depending on your itinerary, you may travel by SUV, 4x4 vehicle, panga, small expedition vessel, commercial aircraft, or scenic flight. You may stay in comfortable hotels, remote lodges, glamping accommodations, or aboard a small ship.


Some days may involve long drives, early mornings, walking on uneven terrain, getting in and out of boats, or spending several hours outdoors. Each itinerary provides specific information about the activities and level of physical activity involved.

  • Travel Documents


International travelers should carry a valid passport and any documentation required for entry into Mexico. Mexican residents should carry appropriate government-issued identification.


Some activities or transportation arrangements may require identification, so please keep your documents readily accessible during your journey.


Travel Insurance


We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that includes medical coverage, emergency assistance, trip cancellation and interruption protection, and coverage appropriate to the activities included in your journey.

Packing requirements vary by destination and season, but the following items are useful for most Panterra journeys.

Baja & Marine Expeditions


For journeys involving snorkeling, boating, or marine wildlife, we also recommend:


  • Swimsuit
  • Quick-drying clothing
  • Towel
  • Waterproof bag or dry bag
  • Light windbreaker
  • Reef-appropriate biodegradable sunscreen
  • Water shoes, when appropriate

Weather & The Seasons


Mexico offers remarkable experiences throughout the year, but the best time to visit can depend on what you hope to see and experience.


Baja California Sur, the Sea of Cortez, Copper Canyon, and Mexico City each have distinct climates and seasonal conditions.


Wildlife encounters are also seasonal. Whales, whale sharks, sea lions, marine birds, and sea turtles are influenced by natural cycles and environmental conditions.


Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed. That unpredictability is part of what makes a true wildlife expedition so special.


Weather and sea conditions may also require changes to an itinerary. When this happens, we work to provide the best possible alternative while maintaining the spirit of your journey.



Transportation


Getting there is part of the adventure.


Depending on your trip, Panterra may use:


  • Private transportation
  • Pangas and other small boats
  • Small expedition vessels
  • Commercial flights
  • Scenic or charter flights


Travel in Mexico can sometimes take longer than expected, particularly in remote areas. Distances can be considerable, roads may be winding or unpaved, and conditions can change.


We encourage you to embrace the journey as part of the experience. Some of Mexico's most memorable places are reached by taking the road less traveled.




Accommodation


Panterra selects accommodations that complement the destination and the style of each expedition.


Depending on your itinerary, you may stay in:


**Hotels**

Comfortable accommodations in cities and towns, selected for their location, character, and service.


**Remote Lodging**

Simple and comfortable accommodations where the surrounding landscape and experience are the main attraction.


**Small-Ship Accommodation**

Staterooms aboard small vessels that allow us to explore Mexico's coastal waters and islands in an intimate setting.

Food & Dining


Food is an important part of experiencing Mexico.


We enjoy introducing guests to fresh, locally sourced ingredients and the regional flavors that make Mexican cuisine so diverse. Depending on your itinerary, meals may include local restaurants, traditional Mexican cooking, fresh seafood, or meals prepared in remote settings.


If you have dietary restrictions or food allergies, please let us know when you book so we can make appropriate arrangements whenever possible.



Money & Communications


The Mexican peso is the local currency. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in cities and larger communities, but cash is often necessary in smaller towns and remote areas.


ATMs may not be readily available in remote destinations, so we recommend carrying an appropriate amount of Mexican pesos.


Cell service and internet access can also be limited or unavailable in remote areas.


**Consider this an opportunity to disconnect.**


There may be times when your phone won't work—but you will be watching whales, exploring canyons, snorkeling with sea lions, or sharing a meal with new friends instead.



Health, Fitness & Accessibility


Our expeditions vary considerably in physical requirements.


Some journeys involve easy sightseeing and cultural activities, while others may include:


  • Walking on uneven ground
  • Hiking
  • Swimming or snorkeling
  • Getting in and out of small boats
  • Long periods outdoors
  • Long drives
  • Early mornings
  • Heat, sun, or changing weather conditions
  • Higher elevations, particularly in Copper Canyon and some tours in Mexico City

Because many of our destinations are remote, accessibility may be limited. If you have mobility concerns or other requirements, please contact us before booking. We are happy to discuss whether a particular journey is suitable and what arrangements may be possible.

An itinerary is a carefully planned framework, but it cannot control the weather, the ocean, wildlife, or other conditions beyond our control. Occasionally, an activity may need to be delayed, modified, or replaced.

  • Do I need to be physically fit?

  • Will I definitely see whales or other wildlife?


Wildlife is wild and sightings cannot be guaranteed. Our experienced guides and naturalists know where and when to look, but nature ultimately makes the decision.


  • What happens if the weather changes our itinerary?


Safety comes first. If weather or other natural conditions make an activity unsafe or impractical, we may modify the itinerary or substitute another experience. We will always do our best to preserve the character and quality of your journey.


  • Are meals included?


Meals included vary by itinerary. Please refer to your individual trip description for details.


  • Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?


We will do our best to accommodate dietary needs when we receive advance notice. Please provide this information when booking.


  • Do I need to speak Spanish?


No. Our guides can assist you throughout your journey. However, learning a few Spanish words is always appreciated—and can make your interactions with local people even more enjoyable.


  • How large are Panterra groups?


Group sizes vary by expedition. We specialize in small-group experiences because they allow greater flexibility, more personal attention, and a closer connection with the places we visit.


  • Can I customize my trip?
